Fan Reaction to Missing Coverage of 2023 US CV Whitney Cup and US Gold Cup (updated)

UPDATE: This article has been updated. The USPA decided to post the missing matches of the 2023 CV Whitney Cup and the 2023 US Gold Cup online. In all, coverage of 24 missing matches was added to the USPA’s YouTube channel. Hence, this article was overtaken by events. Each of the added videos begins with a statement by the USPA indicating that the videos were made public due to the large response from the polo community. First a big thank you to all the fans who reached out to the USPA, and second a big thank you to the USPA for making those 24 matches available. ❤

Original article appears below.

In an absolutely staggering move, the United States Polo Association has elected not to livestream the first 12 matches of the CV Whitney Cup nor the first 12 matches of the U.S. Gold Cup this year. Both tournaments are staples of the U.S. high goal season, and, along with the U.S. Open, are part of the U.S. version of the “Triple Crown”.

At one point in history the USPA was even offering $1 million as prize money for any team that won all three of these tournaments in the same season. How far the bar has fallen now since those heady days.

This is all especially stunning given how (with the advent of inexpensive technology) even children’s elementary school sports is sometimes livestreamed these days to grandparents in far off cities.

It is unclear what the USPA’s thought … Continue

The Copa Cámara

The Cámara

If you’re ever around a high-goal Argentine player and you ask him “Have you ever played in the Argentine Open?” you often hear this response: “No, but I played in the Cámara.”

What is the Cámara? And why is this tournament so revered among Argentine players?

The Cámara is arguably the most important tournament in Argentina outside of the three Triple Crown tournaments. The “Copa Cámara de Diputados” dates back to 1924. Traditionally the winning team was invited to play in the Argentine Open. Today the winning team is invited to play the third-from-the-bottom team of the current year Argentine Open for a spot in the entire Triple Crown the following year. This end-of-the-season match is called the Repechaje Clasificación (or second chance or last chance qualifier). It is played the day after the Argentine Open final, and the winner is entered into all the Triple Crown tournaments for the following year.

The Cámara is the third way to get into the Argentine Open.

The first way into the Open is simply to not be one of the bottom three teams in the prior year Open. The top 7 teams (out of 10 total) are automatically entered in the full Triple Crown for the following year. The 8th team goes to play the Repechaje Clasificación against the winner of the Cámara. The 9th and 10th teams are demoted to next year’s Open qualification tournament.

The second way into the Open is to be one of the top two … Continue

Argentine Open 2021 Final … La Natividad 15 – La Dolfina 13

La Natividad 15 – La Dolfina 13

Although the score was in La Natividad’s favor for most of the afternoon, La Dolfina mounted an intense comeback in the 7th and 8th chukkers. At the start of the 7th, La Dolfina scored the first two goals to bring the score within 2 (after having been down by as many as 5 back in the 5th). La Natividad then responded with 2 goals of their own in the final two minutes of the 7th to finish the chukker at 4 goals ahead. (The previous three chukkers had also ended with La Natividad ahead by four goals.)

In the 8th, La Dolfina scored 3 unanswered goals in the first three minutes to pull within one. Then with 3:27 remaining in the 8th, probably the most critical throw-in of the match took place. Fran Elizalde gained possession on his offside while Adolfo took off for the La Natividad goal to receive a pass. But Polito somehow went around the nose of Elizalde’s horse to steal the ball away and took off on his own breakaway. He scored. Polito’s play turned a potential game tying moment into a two goal lead for La Natividad. Fran Elizalde, astounded that a foul had not been called, decided to take the ball himself out of the very next throw in and go all the way to La Natividad’s goal on a dramatic solo scoring run. La Dolfina was now down by just 1 again, this time with 2 … Continue

Argentine Open Final 2021 … Preview of La Dolfina vs La Natividad

The King Is Dead, Long Live The King

Our brain tells us it’s La Dolfina. And if it’s La Dolfina… well forget it. You can count on them winning any final match of the Argentine Open. Except that this year La Dolfina has almost no chance of winning the final match.

The best player in the world plays for La Natividad. His name is Jeta Castagnola. Jeta’s quiet, unassuming ways lull us into not fully understanding what is going on. Jeta does not argue with umpires. Jeta does not call the camera’s attention via the force of an intense on-field personality. Jeta does not play clones. Jeta does not exhibit the presence of a battlefield commander. Jeta is the opposite of Adolfo in almost every way. Adolfo’s helmet can be seen for miles. Jeta’s helmet is gray. Or is it white? Or is violet? We don’t know. Jeta is the gray man.

To remain unseen by predators, don’t trigger their attention. From an article written in 2013 titled “Gray Man Strategies 101“:

The gray man moves around our awareness without triggering alarms. Energetically, the gray man is withdrawn. He does not project confidence. The gray man moves through the periphery of our awareness without creating any stimulus. This makes the gray man invisible for all practical purposes.

And this is Jeta Castagnola. Nothing else explains why he is left unguarded & undefended time and time again. If you place Jeta in open space with possession of the ball … Continue

Argentine Open 2021 … Preview of RS Murus Sanctus vs La Natividad … Zone B Semifinal

We all hope that the Zone B semifinal match between RS Murus Sanctus vs La Natividad today will be a close thriller. Close matches between top contenders are what we’ve been hoping for since we learned that the 2021 high goal season would not have a 40 goal La Dolfina team to deal with.

If I had to handicap this match, I would set it as La Natividad by 2 goals. In the Hurlingham Open final we watched a speedy La Natividad blow past a slower Murus Sanctus team that seemed a step behind on defense. On Wednesday we watched the 39 goal Murus Sanctus barely slip by the 33 goal Brava. In the Murus Sanctus tent afterward we saw Pablo Mac Donough in obvious pain while the tape wrap was removed from his right thigh.

Despite how much we love watching the separated-at-birth “brothers” Pablo Mac Donough and JuanMa Nero play together, the main issue for Murus Sanctus is this:
JuanMa Nero age: 40 years, 7 months
Pablo Mac Donough age: 39 years, 9 months

Or to put this another way, here is the issue for the Murus Sanctus defense.
JuanMa Nero: 40 years
vs
Jeta Castagnola: 18 years

Combine the above with the fact that it is probably not in JuanMa Nero’s best financial interest to invest heavily in horsepower this late in his career (whereas horsepower is absolutely everything to Jeta Castagnola), and the advantage combined with age tilts in La Natividad’s favor.

In their youth, the … Continue

La Ensenada 12 – La Dolfina 11

The final Chukker of La Ensenada vs La Dolfina today at the Argentine Open (Match #10) … I thought surely La Dolfina would tie up the match in the final minutes and go on to win. In fact everyone at Palermo thought that. And at times it was inevitable! There was a goal-line save by Adolfo with a backshot to Pelon who reminded everyone what 1/2 of the old 40 goal team looked like. Pelon took the ball end to end and drew a foul from Jero del Carril under pressure which set up Adolfo to bring his team within 1. Then there were two tap-the-ball-to-goal scrums in the La Ensenada end, both perfect opportunities for Adolfo to draw a foul. But La Ensenada did not foul. And then there was a last second charge by Adolfo from the Dolfina end. Surely he would score… But it didn’t happen. La Ensenada played great defense and never let La Dolfina get away from them. With the match on the line they refused to give up the inevitable game-tying foul. And against La Dolfina, with all the pressure (like a black SUV filling up the rearview mirror in the fast lane), that’s quite a task.

La Dolfina, we have a problem..

After the destruction of RS Murus Sanctus by the Castagnola boys (with Polito and Nachi D) in the Hurlingham Open final, it becomes clearer that Adolfo needs the Castagnola boys far more than the Castagnola boys need him. If Poroto wants to play with his cousins in an upcoming season, it’s going to have to be squarely in a green La Natividad jersey. With Adolfo’s scorched record of setting things on fire in a crusade to come out on top, La Dolfina could very well be finished now as Goliath. Ten and a half years ago when Dolfi discarded his number 4 and best friend to secure Pablo and JuanMa from Ellerstina, he set in motion a drama that could soon see a harvest of unintended consequences and possibly even a complete and total comeuppance. While there’s still breath in Lolo’s body, his boys won’t be wearing a La Dolfina jersey anytime soon. This leaves Adolfo to now figure out how to engineer a competitive team while fulfilling his final goal as a player: To take the field in an Argentine high goal season with his son. If only the Fates had granted him a second or third son, as they did for his old friend. But alas they didn’t. And by that same twist of fate soon all roads could lead to a different farm in Canuelas.

Hurlingham Open 2021 … Final … La Natividad vs RS Murus Sanctus

Complete and total domination by La Natividad from the first minute of the first chukker until the last minute of the eighth chukker. They smoked RS Murus Sanctus by a score of 14 to 8. The Castagnola kids were incredibly fast. Their speed and quick reactions were in contrast to the patina of Pablo and JuanMa. For RS Murus Sanctus, Facula Sola was invisible and Sapo Caset struggled to find his rhythm. For La Natividad, Polito Pieres, riding high from his successful English high goal season, played superbly. Nachi Du Plessis, the South African, played like he was born an Argentine. The casual observer would’ve assumed Nachi was 100% Argentine, perhaps the older brother of the Castagnolas. La Natividad now goes to Palermo as still a slight underdog to a completely healthy Ellerstina team, but then again the huge boost in confidence from this match might make them a new favorite.

Queens Cup 2021 Goal Miss By Fran Elizalde in Overtime

At the start of double overtime, with the score tied 12-12, officials widened the goalposts at both ends of the field to make it easier for players to score. With five minutes remaining in the 8th chukker, Fran Elizalde had what appeared to be an easy shot to win the match. Instead of hitting the ball smoothly toward the double wide goal, he elected to wind up and try to crush the ball. He missed the goal badly. … Fran Elizalde is rated 9 goals in Argentina, 9 goals in the United States, and 8 goals in England. He is a highly paid professional. What in the world was he thinking? … Video at the bottom of this post.

A Thrilling Match … La Natividad 12 – RS Murus Sanctus 11 (Argentine Open, December 6, 2020)

Until today, no one had beaten RS Murus Sanctus this season other than Ellerstina. And La Natividad appeared well on their way to being a bust in 2020 after almost losing to La Irenita II last Thursday and earlier losing to RS Murus Sanctus by 3 goals back in the Tortugas Open (despite being a goal better on handicap). In Tortugas, RS Murus Sanctus led the entire match from start to finish. They played like a well-oiled machine possibly poised to give even Ellerstina trouble this season. After crushing a crippled La Dolfina in the Hurlingham semis, Murus Sanctus appeared to have arrived at the peak of the elite. (They seemed to sense this as well as evidenced by the ecstatic joy and embraces with family and friends afterwards.) Before today, only Ellerstina had been able to bring them down to earth. In the Hurlingham Finals against the Pieres brothers+Hilario, Sapo Caset missed somewhere near a half dozen penalty shots while Capella, their strong-hitting back, seemed barely able to move the ball while possibly suffering from a case of nerves or something inexplicable. Afterwards, RS Murus Sanctus apologists noted that the Murus Sanctus players had a bad day, a very bad day, and who knows, perhaps they didn’t warm up properly before the big match.

Trying to handicap today’s match, though, against La Natividad, you’d think that RS Murus Sanctus would have been the favorite. They beat La Natividad handily back in the Tortugas Open. Also, in La Natividad’s shocking … Continue

La Dolfina players all wore the 10 jersey

The La Dolfina team all wore the “10” jersey at Palermo today to honor Diego Maradona in their match against La Irenita. This is of course extra cool in that each player for La Dolfina is a 10 goal player and La Dolfina is a 40 goal team.

A small, blurry clip of Chapa vs Suarez from the Copa Cámara De Diputados, December 2, 2020. This video was taken by Hernan Agote from his car! 🙂 The match was played at the Tortugas Country Club mostly in the rain. Two legendary teams and this little clip is all we have from this match.

Indios Chapaleufu II beat Coronel Suarez 9 to 8 with the score tied heading into the final chukker.

Ten Minute Film on the Passion of Polo in Argentina

I love watching this video, especially the parts with Jose Pepe Santamarina.
(in final minute) “Once you are in polo, it is impossible to be out of polo … Once you are inside, it’s like a virus. Once you get that virus.. phew, it’s unbelievable, believe me. You should try it.”

The other great quote from this film is also by Jose Pepe Santamarina:
“Every player dreams with that idea. It’s either having a horse from your own breed playing in the Open or maybe having your son. It’s more or less the same.”

That’s an incredible idea. Nowhere else in the world could this thought be understood. Either your son or your horse playing in the Open and it’s more or less the same thing. Amazing.
